| Back | Anti-clockwise change in the wind direction.

| Backstay | Rear stay holding the mast.

| Bailer | Small receptacle for removing water from a boat.
|

| Ballast | Weight placed low down within the hull of a boat to improve stability.

| Balwarks | Wooden or steel rail running around the deck edge.

| Bar | Shallow patch of water across the mouth of a river or entrance to a harbour.

| Battens | Strips of flexible plastic, wood or GRP inserted into pockets on a sail to maintain a good shape.

| Beam | The width of a boat.

| Bearing | The compass direction of an object from another.

| Beating | Sailing to windward by repeatedly tacking across the wind.

| Becket | An eye or loop in rope.
