With a
solid gradient breeze forecast today the intention today at the Caja
Mediterráneo Region of Murcia Trophy regatta is to take full advantage and
maximise the racing options for both GP42 Series and TP52 Series.
The
TP52 Series are scheduled to race one windward-leeward race with a start time
due to be around 1300hrs. Immediately it finishes the TP52’s will set up for a
short 20 miles coastal challenge which will carry the usual 1.5x points
coefficient. So it will be an especially challenging day for the TP52 teams.
The GP42 Series are programmed to run three back-to-back windward leeward
races.
Winds are forecast to be the strongest that we have seen so far this week, more
reminiscent perhaps of some of last year’s better days. But the breeze will be
between NE and E’ly and somewhere between 16 and 22 knots
Leaders of the TP52 Series at the regatta are TeamOrigin 1851 (GBR) who stepped
eight points clear of second placed Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL) after
scoring a 3,2,1 yesterday. The British crew have struggled in the two coastal
races so far this season with speed problems in Cascais and equipment problems
in Marseille.

20
of the world's best women's match racing teams representing 14 nations will
compete for the World title from 20 to 25 September in New York, USA.
The 2010 Championship is organized by the New York Yacht Club and will be
sailed on Narragansett Bay near Newport
using the yacht club's fleet of 13 Sonars.
Top of the list is defending champion Nicky Souter (AUS) fresh from victory at
the final regatta of the 2009-2010 ISAF Sailing World Cup in Weymouth. The #1 skipper on the ISAF Women's
World Match Race Rankings, Lucy Macgregor (GBR) finished a disappointing ninth
in 2009 but is a clear favourite for the 2010 title. One of the very best
women's match racers in the world, MacGregor will be fighting to become the
first British skipper to ever reach the podium at the Women's Worlds.
Relative newcomer to the women's match racing circuit after making the
transition from the Yngling, Renee Groeneveld (NED) will be making her Women's
Worlds debut in 2010. Groeneveld won her first ISAF Sailing World Cup regatta
at Skandia Sail for Gold in 2009 and followed this with a win Palma this year, she is currently ranked #7
in the world. Another skipper making the move from fleet racing is Anna
Tunnicliffe, the 2008 Olympic gold medallist in the Laser Radial. Tunnicliffe
is ranked at #3 in the world after a busy season which included four World Cup
podium finishes.

During the
RYA Volvo Dinghy Show, LaserPerformance ran a competition for visitors to win a
day of coaching in 30 Bug dinghies at their local sailing club. The lucky
winner was Ellie Bishop of Grafham Water Sailing Club.
The Bug
Competition Day was held on Saturday the 14th August at Grafham. Ian Harrison,
Steve Hopkins and Sam Anderson-Brown from LaserPerformance provided 30 Bugs and
morning and afternoon coaching sessions.
The
LaserPerformance team ran a land based coaching session before allocating boats
and going afloat. The abilities of the sailors was varied, but with tailored on
water tuition, everyone managed to sail the simple figure of eight beam reach
course. Ellie Bishop, our competition winner, had not sailed singlehanded
before, but did a great job of picking up the basics very quickly in the simple
and stable Bug dinghy.
As soon as
the sailors had mastered the figure of eight course, they progressed to a
diamond and then triangular course. The morning session was finished with a
follow your leader sail around Grafham. For the more advanced sailors, some
coaching was given helping them practice and improve their roll tacks and gybes
before heading in for lunch.
